For individuals looking for an alternative to traditional chiropractic care, a Somerset County chiropractor who practices an upper-cervical modality might be able to help.

Dr. Eugene O'Neill, whose practice is based in Branchburg, says this upper-cervical approach is unique for several reasons.

"Many patients are thrilled — it doesn't involve twisting or cracking the neck and spine," he says. "My upper-cervical adjustment employs 2 to 4 pounds of pressure precisely applied to the upper-cervical spine with the patient resting on their side."

O'Neill says an adjustment is "tailor-made" to each patient based on precise testing and calculations because the spinal cord is an extension of the brain within the spinal column.

"This area, which houses part of the brain stem, is a junction for the nerve messages going to and from our brain," says O'Neill, who received a doctor of chiropractic degree in 1991 from the Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa. "Simply, your brain uses the nerve system to run your entire body."

O'Neill also says the nature of this vital spinal-cord tissue, coupled with the uniqueness of the top two neck bones, makes this an area of great concern to upper-cervical chiropractors.

Upper-cervical care has been documented in helping people with more than 100 known conditions.
