Just like one’s spine sometimes needs to be tweaked back into the correct position, so, too, does one’s mind, according to North Adams chiropractor Dr. Peter May.

That’s why May, who has been doing "adjustments" on people’s backs for 25 years, now is doing adjustments on people’s brains in the form of the low energy neurofeedback system, or LENS.

"I’ve never seen anything like LENS," May said while demonstrating the technique on a patient and friend, Al Ells, on a recent Friday morning.

LENS, which has been a Food and Drug Administration-certified medical device since 2009, can be simply explained using a traffic analogy. According to literature on LENS that May gives patients, "Neuroscientists believe that the brain’s defense against significant stressors and trauma creates gridlock. ... Clearing the neural gridlock improves the flow of neural traffic." This can result in decreased anxiety, increased energy levels and better sleep, among other benefits. LENS has helped people with anxiety, autism, migraines, ADD and more, according to the literature.

And that’s what May is most focused on.

"All I want to do is help people," he said.

‘More of an invitation’

To help people by becoming a certified LENS practitioner -- of which there are only 450 around the world -- May completed the first of three levels of training in California with Len Ochs, the creator of LENS. Before deciding to undergo the training, May said, he shadowed childhood friend Dr. David Dubin, a retired ER doctor who practices LENS.
