PORTSMOUTH — Chiropractors Tanya and Nicholas "Nick" Quinn consider their new venture, Quintessential Chiropractic, "a family health oasis."

Nick, 40, was born in New York City, and Tanya, 36, hails from Hopewell Junction, N.Y., outside Poughkeepsie. Both are graduates of the New England School of Law and went into practice in Colorado, where Nick had been involved in the ski industry in Boulder. Nick worked as a deputy district attorney for two years while Tanya practiced in the field of bankruptcy.

"I eventually got to feel continuing in the district attorney's office was a dead end and criminal law was equally limiting," Nick said. "I didn't feel I could simply defend the guilty."

Tanya's motivation to venture into chiropractic came from seeing her sister and cousins helping patients through chiropractic without invasive procedures.

"We treat all ages in a family and spa-relaxing atmosphere," Tanya said. Their 141 Mirona Road office is bright and inviting with none of the hustle and bustle of many medical facilities.

As is the case with many practicing chiropractors who had suffered from some form of illness, Nick found relief from an irregular heartbeat through chiropractic.

"Allopathic medicines were fine, but I found my condition was better controlled through chiropractic," he said.

The pair earned their doctor of chiropractic degrees at the Life Chiropractic College West, in Hayward, Calif.

"We came east, where we have family, and started a search for a mentor," Tanya said. "We researched the existing chiropractors in the area and spoke to patients as well. The name Dr. Kevin Bettencourt kept coming up with highly positive comments. Having gotten no response, we stopped at his Greenleaf Woods Drive office only to find his office manager, Colleen Emery, in a sad state for Dr. Bettencourt had met an untimely death at age 56."
