NEWARK — A Freehold man who admitted using his two medical billing companies to defraud insurance companies has been sentenced to 37 months in federal prison.

Aleksander Sirota, also known as Alexander Sirota, 39, also must pay about $1 million in back taxes and penalties to the federal government along with more than $200,000 in restitution and forfeiture, according to a sentence handed down in federal court Monday by U.S. District Judge Susan D. Wigenton.

In June, Sirota pleaded guilty to defrauding insurance companies, money laundering and conspiracy as part of an effort to conceal $1 million in income derived by his companies, TFS Management Services and ADS Management Services, U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman announced in a statement.

Sirota admitted that between April 2001 and June 2005 he and medical doctors Valery Rimerman, 69, of Closter, and Irina Zelikson, 48, of Old Bridge worked together to defraud multiple no-fault insurance companies providing medical benefits to motorists involved in collisions, Fishman said. The scheme involved submitting false bills to insurance companies for medical treatments not rendered and billing insurers for services rendered by unlicensed and unqualified practitioners.
