An Ottawa man, who had his chiropractic license suspended earlier this year, was sentenced to prison for a gun violation by La Salle County Circuit Court Judge H. Chris Ryan Jr. Wednesday morning.

Gary N. Rowley, 120 Phelps St., was given two years in the Department of Corrections and one year of release supervision following a guilty plea agreement with county prosecutors for possession of a firearm and ammunition by a felon.

Rowley was convicted of battery and violation of an order of protection in 2007.

Last spring, the Illinois Department of Professional Regulation suspended Rowley's chiropractic license after it said he refused to enter an "aftercare" program for alcohol and drug abuse. At the time, Rowley was not in practice as a chiropractor, but was seeking to do so, according to state documents.

The 55-year-old man was first licensed to practice in Illinois in 1991 and claimed he had never been in business as a chiropractor while in Ottawa.

Back in August, during an interview with The Times, Rowley disputed the regulation agency's contentions he refused to enter a residential treatment program and said then he had filed an appeal with the state to have officials reconsider the suspension.
