Brown & Williams Chiropractic Center is a family business - so much so that the chiropractors who work there are all related.

Harold Williams opened his clinic in Humboldt in 1962 but moved to Jackson the next year.

His wife, Shirley, has been an office manager of the family's clinic for more than 40 years. Her husband died in 1999, one year after retiring.

Williams said she's become knowledgeable about chiropractic medicine. She also has seen siblings, aunts, uncles, children and grandchildren join the profession.

Today, there are 19 chiropractors in the family, Williams said.

"There's been a ripple effect within the family," she said. "There are four generations of chiropractors living in Jackson,."

Who's working now

Justin Brown is the third generation of family chiropractors in Jackson and works at the same clinic as his father Steven Brown, aunt Debe Williams and grandmother Shirley Williams.

"My mom and dad met in chiropractor school," he said. "It's just a family thing. And if you ask around town, a certain percentage of people - when you ask about Doc Williams - they know who you're talking about."

Williams said patients were loyal because of her husband's business philosophy.

"He treated his patients like daughters or brothers," she said. "He never spent money on newspaper ads. He said if you treat your patients right, they'll advertise for you."

The family stayed with chiropractic medicine because the children and grandchildren saw patients' reactions, Williams said.

"So many people came into the office because of health problems," she said. "Our daughters saw how hard their dad worked and originally didn't want to do it. But they saw all the medications and problems people their own age were having, so they couldn't say no. It's a rewarding profession."
