When Tonya Mayes was a little girl, she wanted to be a nun and work with the poor.

"I dreamed of being a teacher in the jungle," the Mohrsville woman said.

Mayes got pretty close to that dream recently when the West Reading massage therapist and psychotherapist joined about a dozen other Americans on a three-week trip to Vietnam.

The group traveled across the poverty-ridden country offering free health clinics to everyone from children to the elderly to former combatants.

It was made up of a chiropractor, "body workers" like Mayes and "energy workers."

Body workers use massage and touch techniques to treat a variety of ailments including chronic arthritis, muscle pain and headaches. Energy workers believe the human body is made up of energy fields that can be stimulated through techniques such as acupuncture, shiatsu and therapeutic touch.

The group was led by Dr. John Fisher, a chiropractor from Colorado who had made the trip three times before. Fisher was one of four Vietnam War veterans in the group.
