Chiropractic Clinics Should Emulate General Business: Drop Paper Processes, Gain Efficiency, Increase Profitability, ACOM Chief Software Engineer AdviPublished: 2009-05-27 03:54:55Author: ACOM | May 7, 2009ATLANTA, Georgia, May 7, 2009 - Corporate America and counterparts in
Europe, Japan and elsewhere decades ago discovered the benefits of
reducing and even eliminating paper documents, implementing electronic
business environments to an ever greater degree. But for one reason or
another, the healthcare field has been slow to follow, according to
Vais Salikhov, chief software engineer at ACOM Health, a division of
ACOM Solutions, Inc.
He feels that chiropractors are among those who could adopt the
technology most easily since in most cases, chiropractic clinics are
independently owned and operated as well as comparatively small. Many
are economically fragile and so stand to benefit disproportionately
from the efficiencies and cost savings availed by technology solutions.
Salikhov, who is responsible for the design and upgrade of the ACOM
suite said that clinics adopting technology solutions such as ACOM’s
RAPID chiropractic software suite experience improvements throughout
the practice, such as:
-Diagnostics and coding support;
-Shorter, more effective patient visits;
-Increased patient volume;
-Higher per-visit revenue;
-Faster claim reimbursements, with fewer delays/denials;
-Documented defense against audits, payback demands;
-Greater office efficiency, with improved employee productivity;
-More intimate patient involvement in treatment;
-Increased
patient retention rate;
-Improved practice management.
"Doctors
must take control of their practices by taking control of their
processes," Salikhov said. "The business side of healthcare has become
unimaginably complex and paper processes, once satisfactory, are no
longer adequate to the challenge of building, filing, maintaining,
recovering and using patient records. The only way forward is to adopt
electronic systems that put information at the doctor’s fingertips,
expedite practice operations, and accelerate full, fair payment for
clinic services."
The Federal Government continues to pressure the health science
profession to move in the direction of electronic records and
processes, but with extremely fluid deadlines and only limited
progress. The real question for clinicians, Salikhov said, is why
external pressure is even necessary when the rationale for conversion
is obvious, the price of entry can be very affordable, and the benefits
are easily identified.
"Paper is the enemy of efficiency," he said. "It is expensive, with
multiple forms required to operate a clinic; it slows workflow; it
requires an enormous amount of manual input; it requires secure
storage; it is difficult to file and maintain; transmitting forms and
documents by mail leads to delays and potential losses, and so on.
Paper is yesterday’s technology and represents a drag on clinic
success."
