Is national health care reform possible?

DAVIS COUNTY — It’s a big beast no one seems to know how to deal with. Everyone agrees health care in America is broken. The big question is — how to fix it? An even bigger concern, can it be fixed?

The health care bill, currently running through Congress, has been on a roller coaster ride of twists and turns. With the recent win by Republican Scott Brown in Massachusetts, the Democrats are scrambling to salvage the reform package. Republicans are saying they should just start over, but Democrats believe they’ve come too far to abandon it now.

The president was scheduled to address the nation on that and other issues after press time, Wednesday night.

But most Americans don’t seem to really know what is being debated between the House and Senate. Some observers contend that even the legislators don’t know exactly what’s in the bill.

“Only about six people on the face of the earth even know what’s in there,” said Senior Account Executive of Wells Fargo Insurance Services, Richard Martin. “A 2,000 page document isn’t going to fix it (health care).”

Martin believes that the government is trying to make changes that are too sweeping. “They’re trying to fix something that could be fixed with a screw driver, with a crowbar,” he said.

Brad Kuhnhausen, president of Aim Administration, a group benefit program, agrees. “They’re fixing things that don’t need to be fixed,” he said. “The problem is, until they address what creates the cost,” health care reform can’t take place.

Kuhnhausen is troubled by several pieces of the proposed health care bill. For example, he said the way the House bill is written, an insurance carrier can’t charge less for a younger person and more for an older person.

“Instead of the younger person paying less, they will probably charge them more,” he said. “For young people who don’t want insurance, or who already have it, the rate could possibly double.”
